About the artist

Joe Howard's earliest memory of painting was at five years old.

“My first endeavor in painting began in 1967, when I took some pictures that I painted to the local market, in
Zanesville
. The clerks there bought them for five cents apiece, and I came home with a handful of change. My brother John was so upset that I wouldn't share any of it that my mother made me give him some. This was my first experience with consignment sales."

Joe has been painting in various mediums for over thirty-five years. His primary medium is watercolor, but he has also worked in oils, acrylics, pastels, and pen and ink.

"When I was in the Army, stationed in
Germany in 1983, a friend was leaving for home, and offered me his complete set of acrylics and brushes. I bought them and practiced by painting 3'x3' album covers. I sold several, and was eventually commissioned to paint murals on barracks walls. When I came home, my acrylics ran out, and I didn't have much money, so I began painting in watercolor, since it was less expensive. From that point on, its been my primary medium. That was twenty years ago, and I haven't regretted it".
